Ariana Grande Recalls “Frivolous and Fun” Relationship with Pete Davidson

-In her new Vogue cover story, Ariana Grande reflects on her short-lived relationship with Pete Davidson. “My friends were like, ‘Come [to New York]! We’re gonna have a fun summer.’ And then I met Pete, and it was an amazing distraction. It was frivolous and fun and insane and highly unrealistic, and I loved him, and I didn’t know him.” She also released a new video.

-In her Cosmopolitan cover story, Mariah Carey talks about getting married to music executive Tommy Mottola when she was 23 and he was 44. “You might want to picture a child bride. There was a conscious effort to keep me as this all-American, whatever that means, girl. It was very controlled. There was no ­freedom for me as a human being. It was almost like being a prisoner.”

-The September edition of Vogue is a very big deal — and Meghan Markle is set to guest edit the British version.

–Katherine McPhee and David Foster‘s wedding got a Vogue spread. Huh. I would have bet on People magazine.

–Aziz Ansari’s Netflix special starts and ends with reflections on getting caught up in the #MeToo movement — but in between he seems to pretend it never happened.

–Evan Rachel Wood thinks Chief Hopper on Stranger Things is a problematic TV love interest. I mean, sure he was really grumpy this last season, but out of all the morally questionable dudes on TV right now, this seems like a strange target.

-I love this clip of Winona Ryder refusing to listen to David Harbour make fun of his size.

–Kristen Bell says she will keep making Veronica Mars as long as they let her. And we’ll keep watching it!

-It took a while, but Nicki Minaj eventually decided to cancel her concert in Saudi Arabia following backlash.

–Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul debuted their tequila collab and everyone’s like “cool but what about Breaking Bad tho?”

-Netflix just took another big (but expected) hit: Friends is officially leaving Netflix and moving to WarnerMedia’s streaming service — the terribly named HBO Max. As the TV critic for the New York Times tweeted: “The fact that the biggest story in TV over the next year will be a competition among the decades-old sitcom reruns on streaming TV services really sums up something about pop culture right now.”

-I’m pretty over the Disney remakes, but good on them for not making the new Mulan movie a shot-for-shot remake, and for dropping the original’s problematic characters and songs.

Anne Hathaway Says Instagram Helps Her “Calm Down”

–Anne Hathaway covers the latest issue of Town & Country, in which she reveals that she may be the first person in the world to be calmed down by social media.

-The Surviving R Kelly showrunner said she was waiting for a reckoning and it might finally be here. TMZ reported that the Fulton County DA’s office has opened a criminal investigation into R. Kelly “as a direct result” of what was in the Lifetime docu-series. Plus, there’s a warrant out for his manager’s arrest for “threats” to the singer’s accusers dating back to July 2018.

–Mahershala Ali, who doesn’t drink, says Bill Murray poured tequila on his head at the Golden Globes. He’s much more pleasant about it than I would be.

–Meghan Markle isn’t difficult; she just has a North American work ethic.

-I finally saw Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, and it was as good as everyone said. Brian Tyree Henry was on Jimmy Kimmel Live last night and talked about how his family missed his big scene because they went to get chicken tenders.

–Gordon Ramsay is facing backlash after an old interview with Sofia Vergara resurfaced. While the Modern Family star is being interviewed by host Jay Leno, Ramsay consistently interrupts, makes jokes about Vergara, and at one point touches her leg.

-This timeline of Ruth Wilson’s abrupt exit from The Affair is fascinating, but I still don’t get what happened.

-Can you imagine going to Target and seeing Beyonce there? I’d die.

-The guy who plays Chidi on The Good Place is so surprisingly hot.

–Winona Ryder calls Keanu Reeves “husband” when she talks to him and I’m here for it.

–Jimmy Kimmel is employing federal workers during the shutdown, starting with putting a prison worker on a trampoline.

-Brooklyn Nine-Nine is returning and critics say the NBC version “is just as goofy, warm, fast-moving” as it was on Fox.

-Also returning this week is You’re The Worst, which is reportedly much improved from last season.

–Ethan Hawke moonwalked his way onto The Late Show.

–Ryan Gosling wants consumers to make informed choices about the materials from Congo used to build things like smartphones.

-Speaking of Gosling, THR did a story on club promoters in the early 2000s, and this photo of him with Britney and Justin is amazing.

–Pamela Adlon talked making the new season of Better Things without Louis C.K.  “All of a sudden, he’s gone, my show is dangling from a precipice. It was so huge. And it was so devastating…I’ve never been in a writers’ room, let alone run a writers’ room. Sitting down, meeting writers, reading their stuff—how do you do this? Is this person going to get along with this person? It’s like making a table at a f*cking Bar Mitzvah.”

-The GoT prequel has rounded out its main cast. Hey, it’s the dude from Reign!

-Paradise Hotel is returning to Fox. That show’s first season remains one of the wildest, most entertaining things to ever air.

-A much younger Agent Coulson is back in the new Captain Marvel trailer.

Chris Hemsworth Talks Fatherhood and Finding His Voice

–Chris Hemsworth is out here coming for the title of Best Chris with this new GQ cover story. (I knew it was going to be good when the writer tweeted that she “female-gazed” him.) He talks about prioritizing his family over his career, faking knowledge about wine, and why he wanted to loosen up for the third Thor movie: “The first one is good, the second one is meh. What masculinity was, the classic archetype, it just all starts to feel very familiar. I was so aware that we were right on the edge.”

–Chris Evans also remains in the running due to tweets like this one.

–Winona Ryder revealed that she thinks she and Keanu Reeves might be legally married (“We actually got married in Dracula. No, I swear to god I think we’re married in real life. In that scene, Francis [Ford Coppola] used a real Romanian priest. We shot the master and he did the whole thing. So I think we’re married”). Not surprisingly, Twitter exploded at the news.

–Ben Affleck and 22-year-old Playboy model Shauna Sexton were photographed together again this weekend, so I guess that’s a thing.

–Zoe Kravitz‘s story about Prince being too clingy and crimping her style when she was 18 is great.

-Tonight Ariana Grande says she’ll be hitting the VMAs stage with diverse group of over 50 female dancers.

-Yay for Crazy Rich Asians, which posted a better-than-expected weekend debut of $25.2-$26 million and a five-day launch of as much as $36 million, the best showing in three years for a rom-com and the best showing for any comedy in a year. Nearly 40 percent of the audience was Asian, because representation matters.

-Meanwhile, this is a great tidbit of how How Crazy Rich Asians got Coldplay’s ‘Yellow’ for a key scene. Director Jon M. Chu wrote the band to say “[The word ‘yellow’] has always had a negative connotation in my life … until I heard your song.”

-In a new profile, Idris Elba talks about the “boundless ambition” that saw him go from “basically homeless” before The Wire to being invited to DJ this year’s royal wedding. He also talks about the surprise of proposing to Sabrina Dhowre, a model and Miss Vancouver 2014, despite previously swearing off marriage. “I just fell in love and want to be with that person for the rest of my life.”

-Forbes has released its annual Highest-Paid Actresses list, with Scarlett Johansson coming in at No. 1, and Gal Gadot making the cut.

–John Krasinski‘s new Amazon show Jack Ryan is getting decent reviews, which I’m surprised by for some reason.

-Should I be watching AMC’s Lodge 49? It’s been airing for a few weeks but feels like everyone started tweeting about it all of the sudden. Wyatt Russell is adorable, after all.

–Johnny Depp is claiming self-defense in response to that alleged on-set assault against a crew member. Ok.

-This is a good interview with Netflix’s VP of original programming about why their dramas are so often sluggishly paced (especially around the middle of the season) and why their comedies are more immune to this issue.

-These quotes from Michael Shannon on Trump are a thing of beauty.

-I knew I was going to love To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before. I just knew it. But I didn’t know that my entire Twitter TL would also become obsessed with it. Tweets like this one made me smile all weekend. Or this one, where the writer of the book posted about how she made the stars re-enact iconic romcom moments when she was on set. And now everyone is obsessed with Lana Condor (who carries the movie) and Noah Centineo (who is about to explode; LA Time calls him the next Zac Efron, he was in the “Havana” music video, and he’ll next appear in a Netflix romcom called Sierra Burgess is a Loser on Sept. 7). The fact that they keep leaving flirty comments on each other’s IG posts is a bonus.

-Meanwhile, I like this piece on the movie’s outfits, and this one on how only one production company didn’t want to white-wash Lara Jean’s character.

-I enjoyed this interview with Kieran Culkin, who is killing it on Succession.

-Here’s the trailer for Outlaw King, the Netflix movie that’s going to open TIFF.
