Cardi B Lands the September Issue of Elle

cardi b elle sept cover

Cardi B’s first Elle cover happens to be its most important. She doesn’t waste it either, using the interview to call out male rappers for not talking about Breonna Taylor (“She was young. She looked like she was listening to your music. She looked like she was your fan. You should stick up for her”), and criticize Trump (“Those people that he caters [to], he’s not going to do anything for them. It’s not like Republicans are getting better housing. It’s not like Republicans are getting better benefits. They’re not. He’s not doing anything for anybody”). She also addresses her controversial marriage to Offset (“I do know that my relationship has a lot of drama and everything. But there’s a lot of love, there’s a lot of passion, there’s a lot of trust, there’s a big friendship. It’s always us against the world”).

-In her new Cosmo cover story, Joey King reveals that it wasn’t easy pretending to be in love with Jacob Elordi for Kissing Booth 2 – who she split from in real life. “No one’s thinking to themselves, That was easy, because it wasn’t. I’m sure people will analyze every movement and every detail. And you know what? Let them. But at the end of the day, I was just thrilled to be Elle Evans again…What’s the most, um, correct way to go about this? Elle Evans needs her Noah Flynn, and whatever that means for my personal life, I’ll do anything to make sure the story of my character who I care about so much is complete.”

-In her Health cover story, Hilary Swank talks about returning to Hollywood after taking a five year break to care for her dad.

Beyoncé made a fan’s day by surprising her with a sweet phone call.

-I don’t believe any numbers/ratings put out by streaming companies, but a third party analyst claims Hamilton got blockbuster views.

Stephen “tWitch” Boss, the house DJ on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, made a supportive (I think?) comment about working for her, saying “We can’t speak too much legally about it, but I’ll say this, there’s been love. Obviously there’s some things to address, but from my standpoint and from countless others, there’s been love.”

-Former castmates and friends toast Eugene Levy while he tries not to tear up in this video.

-If I had to guess which new movie is actually going to make it into theatres in two weeks, it wouldn’t be New Mutants, which has suffered multiple delays in the past two years.

Kanye West met with Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner last week  — and TMZ is saying that Kim knew nothing about it.

-This is a fantastic NYT profile on Canadian singer Kathleen Edwards and why she stepped away from the music industry for so long.

Viola Davis didn’t actually purchase the former South Carolina plantation where she was born 55 years ago — her caption meant she owns the “story” not the house.

-This is a pretty great list of the 100 best TV characters of the 21st century. Love seeing Tami Taylor, Tom Wambsgans, Arabella, Forrest MacNeil, Elizabeth Jennings, Paper Boi, and Blair Waldorf make the top 20.

Roxane Gay is adapting her graphic novel for the big screen. Give her all the moneys!

John Leguizamo coaches the first chess team from an inner city to win the U.S. National Chess Championship in the trailer for Critical Thinking.

Viola Davis’ Vanity Fair Cover Makes History

viola davis vanity fair

Viola Davis is on the stunning new cover of Vanity Fair, in which she talks about the BLM movement not being her first form of protest (“I feel like my entire life has been a protest. My production company is my protest. Me not wearing a wig at the Oscars in 2012 was my protest. It is a part of my voice, just like introducing myself to you and saying, ‘Hello, my name is Viola Davis’ “) and the difficulties of being Black in Hollywood (“We know as women, when you speak up, you’re labeled a bitch—immediately… As a woman of color, there is very, very, very little you have to do. All you have to do is maybe roll your eyes, and that’s it”).

-The Viola Davis cover was shot by Dario Calmese, marking the first time in its 100+ year history that Vanity Fair has had a Black photographer shoot a cover. He told NYT how it’s meant to be an image of protest, referencing an 1863 photo of a slave titled “The Scourged Back.”

-There’s also lots of chatter on social about how Calmese lit Davis much better than Annie Leibovitz recently lit Simone Biles.

Meghan Markle urged girls to “build each other up” and to “rebuild the world around them” in a powerful Girl Up Leadership Summit speech. Everyone’s going gaga over her longer hair.

-Glee creators Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk and Ian Brennan announced they are creating a college fund for Naya Rivera‘s son, Josey.

-All of the Glee cast’s memories and stories that they’re sharing of Naya are heartbreaking.

-I spent a very long time on this thread of Naya’s best performances.

Chris Evans‘ website, A Starting Point, launched today. It aims to, in its own words, “create a bipartisan channel of communication” through short videos from elected officials. I’m not sure both-sides-ism is what the world needs right now, but at least they’re saying it’ll be “fact-based and fact-checked.”

-The cast of Happy Endings is set to reunite and perform new scripted material from the writers of the series as part of a fundraiser. I recently rewatched that show and man, it still holds up.

Miranda Kerr and Evan Spiegel cover WSJ Magazine.

-A federal judge has rejected a $46.8 million settlement of the Harvey Weinstein sexual misconduct cases, saying it is not suitable for a class action. “The idea that Harvey Weinstein can get a defense fund ahead of the claimants is obnoxious.”

Bryan Fuller keeps teasing another season of Hannibal and honestly there’s nothing I want more.

-MythBusters’ former co-host Grant Imahara died suddenly following a brain aneurysm. He was 49.

Trina McGee, who went public with the racism and general poor treatment she received from three stars of Boy Meets World when they were filming, said her relationship with two of them (Will Friedle and Danielle Fishel) has improved.  However, she added “I do not talk to Ben Savage at all.”

Christopher Nolan‘s Tenet is likely to be delayed again, as theaters in LA are shut down again.

-In Johnny Depp‘s libel suit against The Sun, the court saw a pic of him passed out and covered in ice cream.

Patrick Stewart‘s quotidian sonnet readings are often the highlight of my day. He read number 80 today — on the eve of his 80th birthday. His BFF Ian McKellen took over sonnet 81.

-Peacock, NBC’s new streaming service, launches today for free. In Canada, it looks like most of the new shows are coming to Corus.

-Stranger Things’ Natalia Dyer discovers masturbation in the trailer for Karen Maine’s Yes, God, Yes.

-After a summer of rampant speculation about affairs and separations, Victoria and David Beckham are presenting a united front in the new issue of British Vogue. They dismiss the rumours (“People have been making things up about our relationship for 20 years, so David and I are pretty used to ignoring the nonsense and just carrying on as normal”) and discuss their family bond (“We both realise that we are stronger together than we are as individuals. Would either of us be in the position that we are in now had we not met and been together all those years ago? It’s all about the family unit. We are much stronger – the six of us – than we would be if we were individuals. We respect that family bond and that is key”).

Victoria and David were also photographed looking cozy this weekend on a yacht in the south of France.

Cate Blanchett talks #MeToo, Brexit and her hopes for her children’s future in her new Harper’s Bazaar UK cover story.

Mindy Kaling‘s tweets on Crazy Rich Asians this weekend were wonderful — though I really wish she’d learn how to thread them.

-Meanwhile, Crazy Rich Asians’ $28.3 million holiday weekend ranks as the best Labor Day showing in over a decade.

-I missed this bit about CRA’s final proposal scene and how it was re-written on the fly. “We had a ring designed already, and our mock-up looked so shitty that Michelle [Yeoh] was like, That cannot be the ring I wear. I’m like, I know, I know. I’m so embarrassed by it, but we don’t have the money. She’s like, I have a better ring than that. So Yeoh asked her assistant to get her box of jewelry and pulled out the ring that Nick eventually proposes with: an emerald and diamond one she bought as a gift to herself.”

-Wait, is Dave Bautista really out here spilling Avengers 4 spoilers because he’s angry about the James Gunn situation? Really tho?

-I think we all deserve to have one moment where Jeff Goldblum describes our personality. Listen to the way he describes Tessa Thompson.

-Whoa! David Cronenberg is in the early stages of developing a TV series.

Nicki Minaj‘s handling of her nip slip during a performance this weekend might be the smoothest recovery I’ve ever seen.

-Actors jumped to the defense of former Cosby star Geoffrey Owens, who was mocked for bagging groceries at Trader Joe’s. Owens then appeared on GMA to say “I’ve had a great life. I’ve had a great career. I’ve had a career that most actors would die for. So no one has to feel sorry for me. I’m doing fine!”

-I don’t know why I find this clip of Janet Jackson admitting she doesn’t know what Hot Cheetos are so endearing, but I do.

-Here are 20 Padma Lakshmi-approved comedians “who are actually funny” and “haven’t harassed women.”

-A bartender named Jade alleges that Cardi B twice set a group of people to attack her for supposedly sleeping with Offset, which Jade denies.

Viola Davis looks amazing on the cover of Variety’s TIFF issue.

Melissa McCarthy‘s new movie Can You Ever Forgive Me is a surprise film fest fave. Word of mouth is so good, I might pick up a screening at TIFF next week.

-TIFF pulled Elle Fanning‘s Galveston from its gala lineup when they realized the cast and director wasn’t planning on attending. Too bad. After what she wore to the film’s premiere I was curious about what she’d show up in.

-I’m way late to this, but I finally caught up on Succession and wow, that was a satisfying finale. Maybe my fave hour of television so far this year.

Dominic Cooper and Crazy Rich Asian’s Gemma Chan definitely seem to be a thing. They were photographed together last week, and then again this week in Spain.

-Here’s The Favourite trailer with Emma Stone, Rachel Weisz and the AMAZING Olivia Colman.
