Taraji P. Henson Stands Up For Herself

taraji-p-henson-instyle

Taraji P. Henson looks amazing on the cover of InStyle. (The subscribers’ cover is even better.) In the interview, she says execs tried to convince her that she wouldn’t do well internationally: “Hollywood executives would tell me that I don’t have fans all the way over there… Then we go to Paris, and it’s standing room only in a room with 1,500 seats. I cried…You can’t let people tell you shit.” (I really wish they would have asked her about whatever the hell happened to torpedo the marketing campaign for Proud Mary. That movie was inexplicably, unforgivably, intentionally buried.)

-New court documents revealed that Kesha and Lady Gaga exchanged text messages about how “mean” Katy Perry was being. Gaga then took to Twitter to explain: “These are old texts. We’ve matured, gotten over the past, love each other & share deep respect. Katy is my friend and is truly a kind soul. End of story.”

Ariana Grande pays homage to Mean Girls, Legally Blonde, 13 Going on 30, and Bring It On in her new video for “thank u, next.” (Bless Mark Ruffalo for saying he’s celebrating with Razzles.)

-Grande’s new video is overshadowing Miley Cyrus’ latest, which tackles heavy issues like gun control and police brutality.

-On Watch What Happens Live, Megan Fox admitted to hooking up with Transformers costar Shia LaBeouf.

-People who weren’t paying attention seemed surprised that Netflix cancelled Daredevil, but seeing what happened with Luke Cage and Iron Fist, it’s clear they’re getting out of the Marvel business. Everyone is expecting the new seasons of Jessica Jones and Punisher will be their last. Don’t expect them to move over to Disney’s new streaming service, either. And even if Marvel is hinting that we’ll still see more Daredevil in the future, it’s likely it will be a whole new take.

Jennifer Garner toasted Bradley Cooper by reminding him of all his middling TV appearances — including on Alias. (“It wasn’t until I heard him speaking French to a background artist on set one day that I went ‘wait a minute, is Bradley handsome?!'”)

-I love that Grownish is recreating the title credits from A Different World.

-Facebook Watch has added Buffy, Angel and Firefly to their streaming service. Dammit, that’s smart.

Connie Britton is on a new TV show that’s doing well, and I don’t have time to watch it. That’s where we are in this era of peak TV.

-Is Prince Charles‘ birthday the real reason behind all the negative stories coming out about Prince Harry and Prince William lately?

-Yikes. Prince Andrew has been linked to the Jeffrey Epstein scandal involving underage girls.

Cardi B and Nicki Minaj are still at it.

-I really want to see The Favourite, but calling it a prequel to Phantom Thread does not to it any favours if you ask me.

Roma will be streaming on Netflix soon, but if you’re in one of the few cities where it’s getting a theatrical release, you should see it on the big screen. Critics are falling over themselves to praise this one.

Diane Kruger, Steve Carell and Eiza González star in the new Welcome to Marwen trailer.

Oprah Interviews Julia Roberts For Harper’s Bazaar

julia-roberts-oprah-harpers-bazaar

-In the latest issue of Harper’s Bazaar, Oprah chats with Julia Roberts, who talks about her kids coming to the realization that she’s not your average mom (‘Are you more famous than Taylor Swift?’), grapples with her feelings about Instagram (“One weekend morning [my niece] Emma [Roberts] slept over, and we got up and were having tea and playing cards and having this beautiful morning, and then a couple of days later she posted a picture of us. And the number of people who felt absolutely required to talk about how terrible I looked in the picture — that I’m not aging well, that I look like a man, why would she even post a picture like this when I look that terrible! And I was amazed at how that made me feel”), and reveals how she celebrated her 50th with her husband (“I said, ‘How about this? We have five days away with zero contact with the outside world.’ That was 50, and it was so beautiful and wonderful. It was just the two of us, and there was a point where I thought, ‘Gosh, this is kind of weird.'”).

George Clooney presented an award to Emma Gonzalez at Variety’s Power of Women ceremony, saying “These are trying times, and trying times create inspirational leaders.” (Also, bless him for introducing himself as “Amal Clooney’s husband”.)

-There were lots of great speeches at the ceremony. Natalie Portman outlined what women in Hollywood can do: “Gossip well. Stop the rhetoric that a woman is crazy or difficult. If a man says to you that a woman is crazy or difficult, ask him: what bad thing did you do to her?” Tiffany Haddish advised to “be yourself and don’t try to be something that you’re not, because that’s when you become a bitter-ass bitch.”

Princess Eugenie got married today and her open-back wedding dress was lovely, but Cara Delevingne stole the show by showing up in a top hat and tails.

Neil Patrick Harris was on The View this week and had a very strange exchange with Whoopi Goldberg about sex. You ok, Doogie?

-This review of the soundtrack to A Star Is Born by someone who hasn’t seen the movie yet made me laugh out loud repeatedly. There were so many good bits, but this might be my fave: “This track was when I fully realized that, to borrow parlance from Vulture associate editor and top-five favorite Twitter user Hunter Harris, I wanted Bradley Cooper to [redacted] me by the [redacted] and [redacted] my [redacted] until we [redacted] at the same time because it seems like that would be possible with him.”

Ryan Adams has apologized for those butthurt tweets about Mandy Moore. “I apologize for my remarks. I was trying to be funny. But I have and will always choose to remember the amazing moments.”

-This is an interesting look at exactly how many men’s lives have been “ruined” since #MeToo started a year ago this week. (Spoiler alert: not many.)

Hugh Jackman‘s tweets about turning 50 are predictably charming.

Shiri Appleby is out here reuniting with all her old costars. Last week it was her Life Unexpected crew, this week Roswell.

-Marvel has fired Chuck Wendig and I don’t really know a lot about the comics world but my Twitter feed is NOT HAVING IT.

-Is new show FBI seriously on its third showrunner already? It’s only aired three episodes!

-Terrible: a crewmember on Sony’s Mr. Rogers pic died after a fall on set.

-This Johnny Depp press tour continues to be horrible. He’s not going to have any axes left to grind after this…

Chris Hemsworth talks about being uneasy with his wealth in the new issue of GQ: “I feel gross about it. I remember saving up for a surfboard when I was younger. The surfboard was 600 bucks and I saved up for a whole year with Dad’s help. I didn’t even want to surf on it for fear of damaging it. It taught me so many lessons about appreciation and working hard for something. When I think about my kids, I don’t want them to miss that joy. Elsa and I talk a lot about how we instill that same appreciation and respect for things.”

Usher dropped a surprise album this morning.

Jaboukie Young-White‘s debut on The Daily Show was very, very good.

-I’m bummed that All American tanked in the ratings. On the plus side, it’s on the CW and they don’t seem to care about pesky little details like that…

-Here’s the first Aladdin teaser. I was hoping for a glimpse of Will Smith as the genie, but at least we get confirmation that Mena Massoud‘s Aladdin is hot.

Samuel L. Jackson, Bruce Willis and James McAvoy complete M. Night Shyamalan‘s trilogy more than 18 years in the making in the new Glass trailer.

Taraji P. Henson and Sam Rockwell go head-to-head in the trailer for The Best of Enemies, which depicts the real-life feud and subsequent friendship between civil rights activist Ann Atwater and former Ku Klux Klan leader C.P. Ellis.

Taraji P. Henson Talks Empire & the Art of the Hustle in Marie Claire

taraji-p-henson-marie-claire

-Wow, I adore Taraji P. Henson’s new Marie Claire cover.

-First Armie Hammer dragged James Woods on Twitter, and now Amber Tamblyn is getting in on the action.  She originally tweeted “James Woods tried to pick me and my friend up at a restaurant once. He wanted to take us to Vegas. ‘I’m 16’ I said. ‘Even better’ he said.” After he denied it she tweeted “Calling me liar, James? This is now far from over. That I can promise” and is now RT’ing other people’s gross stories about him.  I love this.

Prince Harry reportedly enjoyed an early birthday celebration this past weekend with Meghan Markle in London. He turns 33 on Friday.

-Another day, yet another Star Wars shakeup. Days after Colin Trevorrow  parted ways with the franchise, J.J. Abrams  was announced as the new writer/director of Episode IX.  Not the most inspired or diverse choice, but I get why they wanted to go the safe, competent route after all the disarray. The change means the premiere date has been pushed seven months to Dec 2019.

Russell Brand wants to make amends with ex-wife Katy Perry, who he dumped via text. “I’m willing and open for reconciliation, any kind. Because if we can’t overcome our relatively trivial personal disputes in this world, what hope is there for us?” How big of him.

Louis C.K.‘s new film I Love You, Daddy and I, Tonya (which reportedly features an incredible Margot Robbie performance) landed the top deals of this year’s TIFF market so far.

-Meanwhile, while promoting the film in Toronto Louis C.K. was asked by the NYT about those rumors of sexual misconduct with female comics, and he shut it down. “I’m not going to answer to that stuff, because they’re rumors…If you actually participate in a rumor, you make it bigger and you make it real.”

Michelle Williams and Busy Phillips reminiscing about all the actors they kissed on Dawson’s Creek is kind of the best.

Randy Jackson says that his sister Janet’s divorce arose from an “abusive situation,” and claims she suffered “verbal abuse” and felt like “a prisoner in her own home” during her marriage to businessman Wissam Al Mana.

Kristen Bell played bingo, had wheelchair races and ate dinner with thousands of nursing home residents who evacuated to her Orlando hotel during Irma.

-Good on Glamour Mag for fighting back against hateful Instagram comments about one of their employees.

-In a rare political post, Selena Gomez asked her millions of followers to defend DACA.

-Meanwhile, Elle Fanning learned the hard way what happens when Selena tags you on Instagram.

-I always have time to watch a new Radiohead video.

-The fact that Syfy added the founder of BGN to their advisory board makes me want to watch Syfy shows.

Jason Mamoa posted an Instgram video of him on a climbing wall and it’s rul nice.

-This footage of Rami Malek performing as Freddie Mercury is pretty promising.

-My friends and I are really split one The Florida Project (I loved it, they didn’t), but Drake just endorsed the film so I’m really feeling better about my opinion now…

-Here’s the first trailer for James Franco‘s The Disaster Artist. He’s getting raves for his performance.

-A new trailer has officially dropped for Alexander Payne’s Downsizing. The reviews coming out of TIFF for this one are also pretty stellar.
