Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth Split

-The big news of the weekend was that Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth are splitting after less than a year of marriage. The announcement came after came after Cyrus was photographed kissing Kaitlynn Carter, Brody Jenner’s ex, while on holiday in Italy.

Hemsworth was approached this morning by The Daily Mail Australia while out in Byron Bay. “You don’t understand what it’s like,” the actor told the outlet. “I don’t want to talk about it, mate.” 😢

-The Morning Show, Apple’s new show starring Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon, released its first teaser. (It’ll be available via Apple TV but the cost still hasn’t been announced, which seems nuts since this streaming service is set to launch in like a month.)

Josh Kloss, the actor who played Katy Perry’s love interest in her 2010 “Teenage Dream” video (aka the best pop song of the last 10 years), shared a lengthy Instagram post detailing the alleged humiliation he suffered at the hands of the pop star. He said she was “cool and kind” in private but “cold as ice” whenever other people were around, and claims she once pants’d him in public.

Priyanka Chopra was at BeautyCon this past weekend and was asked about her previous tweet on the India–Pakistan conflict. Her response was not great, bob.

Kim Cattrall won’t stop talking about another Sex and the City movie — even if we wish she would. “It was a blessing in so many ways but after the second movie I’d had enough. I couldn’t understand why they wouldn’t just replace me with another actress instead of wasting time bullying. No means no.”

Lady Gaga is donating school supplies to the communities of El Paso, Dayton, and Gilroy.

-The Teen Choice Awards always make me feel old, but last night’s was especially a doozy. So many YouTube stars I don’t care about!

Chris Evans tweet-flirting with Yvette Nicole Brown on her birthday is very cute.

Olivia Colman is my queen — and now she’s everyone’s. Netflix released the first look at the actress as Queen Elizabeth II in season three of The Crown, out Nov 17.

Sarah Silverman says she was recently fired from new movie after a photo of her in blackface from her show resurfaced. (She’s talked about it before, calling it her most “regrettable joke” back in 2015). “There’s a still of me on Twitter in blackface and it’s totally out of context and I tweeted it when Twitter was new and the people who followed me watched that show and it was from that show. Now it’s forever there and it looks…it’s totally racist out of context and I regret that.”

-Alanis Morissette‘s third child, Winter Mercy Morissette-Treadway, was born last week.

-Based on a Trump remark and some conservative faux-paranoia around a movie no one has even seen yet, Universal has cancelled The Hunt release. This makes no sense — not only have movies like The Purge franchise existed for years, if anything right-wingers should love a film about poor people rising up to defeat rich elites. What’s it gonna take for us to get Betty Gilpin: action star?!

-In happier news, The Farewell continues to be the lil’ movie that could. It has boosted its domestic haul to $10.2 million.

-Netflix dropped the first trailer for My Name Is Dolemite starring Eddie Murphy as comedy and rap pioneer Rudy Ray Moore.

Janelle Monae Covers InStyle

Janelle-Monae-InStyle-August-2019

-I love the subscribers’ edition of Janelle Monae’s InStyle cover.  The interview is predictably fun too, in which she drops bon mots such as “I speak android, which is helpful for the future, since we will be merging” and “If my mother had let me have a vibrator at a young age to be in touch with my body more, I could have saved myself from so many poor decisions.”

-When I first heard about Scarlett Johansson‘s latest comments (‘I should be allowed to play any person, or any tree, or any animal’) I took it with a grain of salt because the quotes came from a longer fashion interview and were then repackaged by the Daily Mail, which tends to present out-of-context soundbites for clickbait. But then I read her clarification and nope, she just doesn’t get it. If she really cares about telling these kinds of stories, instead of playing the lead in a movie about a trans man, why wouldn’t she come on as a producer and take a smaller part, using her name/clout to get the film made? Instead, she faced backlash about playing the lead, the movie now appears to be buried, and she’s out here talking about political correctness getting in the way of art.

-I have watched/analyzed this video of Meghan Markle meeting Beyonce and Jay Z way, way too many times. Jay looking like he’s afraid to fully hug her while his wife is watching slays me every time…

-Well, this is a swerve. Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach will co-write a Barbie pic starring Margot Robbie.

-I don’t know what app Channing Tatum is talking about, but I love that he’s so chill about being in therapy.

-And so it continues: Kim Cattrall says she’ll never do another Sex and the City movie: “It’s a no from me. You learn lessons in life and my lesson is to do work with good people and try and make it fun.”

-I didn’t know that Zach Braff is dating Florence Pugh but yeah, that tracks.

Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello are still … doing whatever it is they’re doing.

-Indie film The Farewell, which stars Awkwafina and was a hit at Sundance, already surpassed Avengers: Endgame for biggest theater average of the year, and it’s in limited release.

-All 8 episodes for the Veronica Mars revival drop this weekend and the reviews are mostly positive — but there seems to be a big, dark plot twist in the finale that has critics divided.  They better not harm a hair on Logan’s head!!

-I’m not sure about the story floating around that Captain Marvel’s Lashana Lynch will play 007. The sourcing for the original article is shaky, and it just says that Lynch plays a new agent who inherits Bond’s codename, not that she’ll be the main character. I’d love her to take over the franchise but I don’t want to get my hopes up until a more credible source confirms it.

-The Russos are teasing some kind of Community thing at this weekend’s Comic-Con for the show’s 10-year anniversary.

-Oof, the reviews for The Lion King are roughhhhhhh.

Bradley Cooper and Laura Dern had lunch, and we have questions.

-Speaking of Dern, there’s only one more episode left this season in Big Little Lies and everyone’s wondering if it will be able to save the nonsensical season.

-Here’s the first trailer for On Becoming a God in Central Florida, Showtime’s dark comedy series starring Kirsten Dunst.

Lin-Manuel Miranda Is an Unstoppable Force

Lin-Manuel Miranda‘s cover profile in Vanity Fair makes him seem even nicer than you thought — which shouldn’t be possible.

-Royal dramaz! A new report claims that the drama-filled run-up to Meghan Markle‘s wedding, Kate Middleton was left in tears after an argument over Princess Charlotte’s dress.

-I kind of like that Taylor Swift is with someone who refuses to talk about her  in the press. When pressed about her in his GQ profile, Joe Alwyn responded “Someone’s private life is, by definition, private. No one is obliged to share their personal life.” Bad for gossip, but good for her.

-It’s starting to make more and more sense why Kim Cattrall didn’t want to do a third Sex and the City movie — Samantha’s main storyline reportedly revolved around Miranda’s 14-year-old son Brady lusting after her. Also, Mr. Big was supposedly going to die of a heart attack at the beginning of the movie, making it more about Carrie’s grief than the relationship between the four women. All in all, it sounds like she was smart to bow out, even if it turned her into the bad guy in the press.

David Beckham is getting some heat on Instagram for kissing his daughter (because people are the WORST), and Tom Brady has jumped to his defense.

Ariana Grande’s “thank u next” video will pay homage to Mean Girls and I can’t wait!

Adam Levine says he understands women because he has daughters. Oh well, OK THEN!

-I love this piece on Matthew Macfadyen. The fact that the douche on Succession is the same guy who played Mr Darcy still blows my mind.

Jaden Smith says he’s dating Tyler, The Creator. I mean, sometimes I say I’m dating Idris Elba, but that doesn’t make it true.

-Unlike her fellow creators, Ava DuVernay didn’t go the Netflix route. Instead, she’s signed a $100M deal with Warner Bros TV.

-In news that should surprise no one but delight everyone, a To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before sequel is officially in the works.

-Amazon is pulling out the big guns for their Modern Love TV show. The cast includes Anne Hathaway, Dev Patel, Tina Fey, John Slattery, Catherine Keener, Andy Garcia, and Cristin Milioti.

Ethan Hawke gave a rousing speech at the Gotham Awards. “We are living in a time period where the environment, education, racial equality … they are being criminally disregarded. It’s a real problem. It’s unacceptable.”

-Green Book flopped hard at the box office. I wonder what that will do to its Oscar buzz?

-Yeah ok, I laughed at the red band trailer for What Men Want.
