Florence Pugh’s Streak Continues

florence-pugh-vogue

-I feel like I have Florence Pugh face blindness. I’ve seen her in Midsommar, Fighting with My Family and Little Women, but I still don’t know that I could pick her out of a lineup. Regardless, her Vogue spread is very good.

-Now that the dust is starting to settle, the Evening Standard has a timeline of how Prince Harry and Meghan Markle‘s announcement reportedly went down. Harry originally contacted Prince Charles about spending more time in Canada and America just before Christmas, but was told he needed to come up with a thought-out plan. He was then told the Queen would meet with him, but “would not discuss his wishlist before he had discussed it in detail with his father.” But then that meeting was blocked by courtiers. Prince Charles and Prince William were only sent a copy of Harry and Meghan’s statement “10 minutes” before it was released.

-According to Lainey, there’s an implication that Harry and Meghan rushed the announcement it to get ahead of The Sun’s story — which was broken by a reporter who happens to be good friends with Will and Kate’s press secretary. 👀

The Mirror claims Will is “incandescent with rage,” while the Daily Mail claims Harry has been locked in four-way conference call with the Queen, Charles, and Will as they try to find “workable future role within days.”

-I kind of love that the couple’s new website was made by a Toronto agency (which might explain how they were able to keep it under wraps from the family).

-This is surprising to me: according to People, when Harry and Meghan returned to London this week, Archie remained in Canada. “It is believed that Archie stayed with Meghan’s close pal, Jessica Mulroney.”

-It was a very good day for news to come out that the Queen’s granddaughter Zara Tindall was banned from driving for speeding.

-Yesterday was the perfect day for celebrities to slide some news under the radar, so I’m surprised there wasn’t a wave of divorce announcements. The only one I saw was from Arrow’s Katie Cassidy, who split from her husband after just 13 months of marriage. (Weirdly because I follow all of them on IG, it seems like all three actresses who’ve played Canary are going through major splits with their SOs right now.)

-At Wednesday night’s National Board of Review gala, Bradley Cooper presented Brad Pitt with the Best Supporting Actor award and in his acceptance speech, Pitt credited Cooper for helping him get sober. “I got sober because of this guy, and every day’s been happier ever since.” Pitt also brought the jokes, quipping, “It’s nice to be able to leave this thing carrying something other than George Clooney.”

Pitt also did a video interview for W, in which he reminisces on his prom and first kiss (“Her name was Lisa. It was in her garage. It was in fourth grade. She was one street over. I ran home afterwards. It was just too much.”)

-Kids teaching their famous parents how to use TikTok is my fave new thing. Me next, please.

-It’s really something to see Kristen Stewart this relaxed and actually having fun while doing movie promo. She’s grown so much.

-I adore Jane Austen and will consume everything related to her, but Sanditon, which starts Sunday on PBS, is a tough hang for me — just because the ending is so very non-Austen-y. The reviews are glowing, though.

Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Aniston‘s table ran out of beverages at the Globes, so Reese asked Beyonce for some champagne. That is some Madeline energy right there.

Tiffany Haddish said she first took a meeting with Like a Boss costar Rose Byrne at a hotel bar when she noticed two gay men. “I start hitting on them and once I get a little drink in me, I want to, you know, donate my womb. I was like ‘If y’all want to have a baby, let me know. I’ll pay child support. Y’all can raise it. I’ll carry it and I’ll breastfeed it for six months and it’s all yours.’ Rose was like, ‘No, Tiffany. You can’t do this. You need to go to your room.’ That’s when I knew we’d be friends forever. She protected my womb.”

Mae Whitman posted a Parenthood reunion pic and I felt it with my whole heart.

-The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina released a music video to promote the new season and it’s … something.

-The Television Critics Association panels are happening this week, and FX CEO John Landgraf did his annual #PeakTV report, revealing scripted originals grew 7 percent in 2019 and set a record — topping 500 show in a year for the first time.

-FX also announced that Atlanta will get an expanded order — but won’t air until 2021.

-They also revealed trailers for two of the year’s most anticipated new shows: Devs, from Alex Garland, writer/director of Ex Machina and Annihilation, which stars Nick Offerman and Sonoya Mizuno, and follows a computer developer investigating a quantum computing company that she believes is responsible for the disappearance of her boyfriend; and Mrs. America, starring Cate Blanchett, Sarah Paulson, Tracey Ullman, Rose Byrne, Uzo Aduba, Margo Martindale, Elizabeth Banks and John Slattery.

Bong Joon Ho‘s Parasite is heading to HBO as a limited series. I adored that movie and this seems like a very bad idea.

-I’ve been sort of following the drama in Romancelandia because it’s all over my TL, but this is big. Romance Writers of America president has resigned (finally!) after publishers Harlequin, Berkley, Kensington, Avon, and St. Martins all pulled out of the RWA national conference. (This is a good recap of what initially went down, although the RWA has continued to handle it all horribly since then.)

-I’ve been feeling superhero fatigue (both from movies and TV) for a while now, but goddamn the new Birds of Prey trailer is good. Goddamn.

Ariana Grande Sings ‘Somewhere Over the Rainbow’ in Manchester

Miley Cyrus, Justin Bieber, Katy Perry, Coldplay, Pharrell Williams, Black Eyed Peas, and Liam Gallagher joined Ariana Grande for her emotional One Love Manchester charity concert this weekend. And the night before the concert, she spent the day visiting injured fans.

Julia Roberts is really leaning into this whole TV thing. Last week she nabbed an HBO series, and now she’s in talks to star in a thriller by Mr. Robot’s Sam Esmail.

-Meanwhile, Sam Esmail and Emmy Rossum went to Rwanda for their honeymoon, which I’m pleasantly surprised by.

-Remember last week when we thought the new Spider-Man poster was the worst thing ever? Transformers just pulled a “hold my beer.”

Taylor Swift spent the weekend in Nashville with new boyfriend Joe Alwyn. I continue to be fascinated by her social media blackout, and curious about how she’s going to ease back in when her new album is ready to drop.

-After dropping his second racial slur this weekend, why are people even debating whether or not Bill Maher should be fired?

-Wait, so Halle Berry is not pregnant? Then what was with all the red carpet belly cupping?

-This doesn’t bode well: UnReal’s new season was supposed to premiere this summer and now it’s been delayed until 2018. That means when it returns it will be almost two years since the last ep aired. On the plus side, maybe this gives them enough time to undo all of last season’s wrongs.

-Wife swap: Kevin Can Wait dropped Erinn Hayes (who plays Kevin James‘ wife) for his King of Queens costar Leah Remini. I don’t watch that show (cause, ewww) but man, that’s gonna be an awkward transition.

-Congrats to Katie Cassidy, who just announced her engagement. (Weirdly though, I saw her and her boyfriend in September in Toronto and it was not that guy.)

-I’m so happy about Wonder Woman’s performance! It had a  record-breaking opening weekend, debuting to $103M at the North American box office and $223 million worldwide and marking the top opening ever for a woman director. It’s especially impressive considering Wonder Woman isn’t a sequel and the audience skewed female (52 percent), when most superhero films rely on 60 percent or more of the audience being male. And it only dropped 16% from Sat to Sun (instead of the predicted 28%), which bodes really well for it’s staying power over the next few weeks. It also did really well in China, which is becoming increasingly important.

-After watching Wonder Woman, I’m inclined to agree with this take that Chris Pine is the best famous Chris (or at least tied with Evans). He’s definitely the best actor.

Chris Hemsworth is attempting to make his way up the list by acting out his own Avengers movie with action figures. Nice try, but then Pine said this.

Vulture’s Wonder Woman movie review is getting slammed for being weirdly pervy and sexist. It’s terrible but I’ve come to expect that from David Edelstein. As a commenter pointed out, this was his take on a 10-year-old Emma Watson in his review of the first Harry Potter movie: “The prepubescent Watson is absurdly alluring to those of us who always went for bossy girls; when she fixed her sharp brown eyes on Radcliffe… my heart did about five somersaults.” Just let that sink in: she was ten when she filmed that movie.

Dan Aykroyd went off on Paul Feig, saying the director ruined any chance at a Ghostbusters sequel by blowing the film’s budget with $30-$40M in reshoots. Sony has responded, saying that the reshoots were actually around $3-4 million.

Donald Glover interviewed Zazie Beetz, who plays his love interest on Atlanta, and the results are super charming.

-The OITNB hackers leaked 8 episodes of Steve Harvey’s unaired talk show. Of all the shows to leak, this is a weird choice.

-I haven’t finished the new season of Master of None yet, but the New York, I Love You and Thanksgiving episodes are amazing. Here, Aziz Ansari takes us through the former.

Matthew McConaughey and Idris Elba face off in three new teasers for Dark Tower.

-Tom Cruise plays a hustler and a pilot who’s recruited by the CIA in the American Made trailer.

Samira Wiley Got Married

-Congrats to OITNB’s Samira Wiley and Lauren Morelli, who are officially married! (I’ve got nothing but love for any wedding outfit that includes a cape.)

Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner were looking very cosy with the fam this weekend.

-This article wondering why male critics are so baffled by Big Little Lies is asking all the right questions.

-Speaking of BLL, Shailene Woodley will have one year probation for her pipeline protest, but she still encourages people to take a stand.

This photo made me feel really bad for Justin Bieber.

-And this video made me feel really bad for Selena Gomez.

-I assumed Aaron Sorkin‘s comments in which he appeared to be unaware of Hollywood’s diversity problem were sarcastic, but then I remembered this. And this. So yeah, he just sucks. It’s crazy that someone who writes the most self-aware characters has none of that self-awareness himself.

Katey Sagal opened up about welcoming her ‘beautiful miracle’ Esme via surrogate when she was too old to carry a child.

-CHIPS may be a flop, but it’s the latest reminder that Michael Peña is a Hollywood unicorn that should be protected at all costs.

-Tired of police destroying evidence of your sexual assault? Tatiana Maslany introduces the Sexual Assault Survivor’s Utility Belt!

-Dammit, Fallon, Migos, The Roots, and classroom instruments might actually make me like “Bad and Boujee.” I resisted for so long!!

-One Direction’s Liam Payne is a dad now.

-It’s stupid that they didn’t release the full Red Nose Day Love Actually scene on iTunes in North America and raise a ton for charity. No one is waiting two months to watch it on NBC.

-Speaking of Red Nose Day, James Corden and Take That were very cute.

-I am very glad Bravo Canada has picked up The Handmaid’s Tale. Yay!

Terrence Howard now says being abusive is not part of his history. Wait, we can do that??! In that case, I most certainly did not take belly-dancing for a year and end up at a recital wearing nothing but undergarments and a sheer skirt….

-Between David Milch joining True Detective’s third season, and Katie Cassidy returning to Arrow as a regular,  I literally don’t understand any of today’s TV announcements.

-The Justice League trailer is here, and it’s kind of a mess.

Sony’s upcoming Spider-Man universe won’t be connected to the MCU. But wasn’t he introduced in the last Captain America movie? Ugh, so confusing. At least the new trailer is cute.
