Beyoncé Embraces Her Past & Teases New Music

Beyonce on the cover of Harper's Bazaar in a pale feathered dress

-Harper’s Bazaar just won the September cover wars by getting Beyoncé to grace their icons issue. Though not really an interview (’cause she still doesn’t do those), she talks about how the quarantine gave her a chance to focus on herself (“I have not always made myself a priority. I have to take care of myself and listen to my body”), and what she’s working on (“I’ve been in the studio for a year and a half. There’s nothing like the amount of love, passion, and healing that I feel in the recording studio. … Yes, the music is coming!”)

-People are going crazy about it, but I am not buying these dubious reports about Jennifer Aniston and David Schwimmer dating. What even is this source?? Until we get a legit sighting, let’s assume they’re still on a break.

Harry Styles and Olivia Wilde look happy and matchy while on a lunch date.

Christina Applegate revealed she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis earlier this year. “It’s been a tough road. But as we all know, the road keeps going. Unless some asshole blocks it.”

Alfred Molina got married to Frozen director Jennifer Lee — and Frozen’s Jonathan Groff officiated.

-I saw a headline about “Tom Hanks‘ son” posting a rant about masks and comparing the coronavirus to the flu and thought “Please don’t be Colin. Please don’t be Colin.” Shoulda known it was Chet lol.

Rihanna‘s Fenty perfume sold out within hours, so she celebrated with caviar in bed. We have very different lives.

-Does this mean we’re going to be able to smell like her now? Because no one’s scent gets randomly mentioned as much as hers.

-It looks like Lily-Rose Depp is no longer with Timothée Chalamet. She was spotted making out with Austin Butler.

-I’ve watched all of HBO’s The White Lotus and I’m still very undecided about whether I like it or not. I like what it’s saying about class and race — but I don’t think I actually *like* it. In any case, it got renewed for a second season with an entirely new cast. Creator Mike White has talked about how season one came together quickly because HBO needed an easy-to-shoot-during-covid show to slot into their schedule, and every script is like the “first draft,” so maybe I’ll give season two a shot.

David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson sending each other birthday tweets has really made my week.

-Buffy’s Eliza Dushku welcomed her second son.

Ali Wentworth says she and Mariska Hargitay once encountered a black bear while hiking. “I kept saying, ‘You’re Olivia Benson, do something, go fight the bear!’ ”

-I’m glad film critics are fighting back at studios who demand the screenings be in person.

-The Green Knight will be available for streaming one night only for $20.

-Warner Bros. has agreed to a deal for an exclusive 45-day release for their movies at AMC Theatres in 2022, meaning they will not release day-and-date on HBO Max as originally planned.

Brendan Fraser got choked up after being told that everyone online is behind him and excited for his new project. I saw him on a panel a couple of years ago and was so intensely charmed. He deserves all the good things.

-I love this piece on Jean Smart and her costumes from her various roles of this year.

-Netflix and The Haunting of Hill House’s Mike Flanagan are joining forces again for more scares in the seven-episode limited series Midnight Mass, streaming September 24.

Succession Is Coming Back This Fall

-It’s Logan v. Kendall in the new Succession season 3 teaser. I cannot wait!

-I’m underwhelmed by Gwen Stefani’s Vera Want dress. Her original pink dress was just too high a bar to clear. At least she went non-traditional for the reception. The wedding ceremony was officiated by Carson Daly.

Harry Styles and Olivia Wilde are PDAing their way through Italy. Good for them.

-Every E. Alex Jung is a must-read. But this one on Jennifer Coolridge? Its a must-read-right-now. It’s filled with tidbits like this: “I always said I was Muffin Hemingway [at the clubs] if I couldn’t get in. One time I got thrown out of a club because I was behaving badly, and they said, ‘Don’t ever come back here, Muffin!'”

-Congrats to Being Human and Hawaii 5-0 star Meghan Rath, who just revealed her pregnancy.

-The first day of Cannes gave us Jodie Foster speaking French, Pedro Almodovar as a surprise guest, jury president Spike Lee in a hot pink suitMarion Cotillard in bike shorts, Adam Driver getting Oscar buzz, and Helen Mirren dancing on the red carpet.

Elizabeth Hurley’s son Damian says he’s “Grateful for my beautiful family, today and every day” — despite being cut of out his late father’s $330m will.

-I just finished Cruel Summer a few days ago, which was a fun, twisty little show. The second season will move ahead without creator Bert V. Royal. According to the Hollywood Reporter, he quit his Freeform series after clashing with an exec last summer just after the pilot finished shooting.

-This is a very well-written review of the Gossip Girl reboot, which says the show wants to start a revolution but has no idea how. I also like this one, which reminds us it’s harder than it looks to make really good trash.

Seth Rogen wins Twitter this week with this tweet: “Once I was in the spa in a hotel in Vegas getting a massage. When I finished I turned over and to my shock Paul Rudd was massaging me. He saw me go in and convinced the masseuse to let him take over, thinking I’d notice immediately. I didn’t, and Paul did the entire rest of it.”

-This seems to be implying that Jennifer Lawrence is pregnant? I kind of thought she already was, but that was me mixing her up with her BFF Emma Stone.

Larry Rudolph has stepped down as the Britney Spears‘ manager after 25 years. “It has been over 2 1/2 years since Britney and I last communicated, at which time she informed me she wanted to take an indefinite work hiatus. Earlier today, I became aware that Britney had been voicing her intention to officially retire.”

-Her long-time attorney (who was chosen for her), Sam Ingham, is also stepping down.

-I don’t watch Top Chef but by most accounts this season was one of its best, so it sucks that the winner is now surrounding by controversy.

Val Kilmer made a documentary about what it’s like to be Val Kilmer.

Reese Witherspoon Talks Movies and Money

reese witherspoon in a black dress and white heels

-This is a very non-Reese Witherspoon cover for Interview. She talked to Tracee Ellis Ross for Interview about being a woman in Hollywood (“I had a studio head say to me, “Reese, we already have a movie with a woman this year. We can’t make another one'”) and having conversations about money (“The [thing] that really drives me nuts is that women aren’t encouraged to have conversations about financial literacy. And when things drive me crazy long enough, I feel like I’ve got to go do something about it, and it takes me a while to figure out what to do, but I’ll bring it up to literally everybody who crosses my path. You know me as the ‘How will this make money?’ and ‘Where is the revenue stream?’ girl”).

Ariana Grande joined James Corden to celebrate the end of lockdowns in New York and California by singing a new version of Hairspray.

Harry Styles is really pushing into acting, huh? There’s also talk that he’s in the Eternals movie (which may be how Selma Hayek knows him).

-I’m loving this new Vincent song with Tegan & Sara.

-Oh god. Dwayne Johnson is totally going to run for president, isn’t he? “I’m not a politician nor did I ever have political passions, and quite frankly I’m not sure I even have the patience or resignation to deal with the B.S. that comes with politics and politicians, but when 46% of Americans say they’re in favour of me becoming president, that forces me to humbly and respectfully stand up, listen and learn.

-Not surprisingly, new mom Meghan Markle will not be flying to London with Prince Harry for the unveiling of the new Princess Diana statue next month.

-I really liked this conversation between Bowen Yang and Jean Smart for Variety. She told him: “I would like to thank you personally for speaking out against the violence against Asian peoples that has been going on. My daughter is from China. We adopted her when she was 10 months old, and I do worry lately.”

Paris Jackson says the paparazzi has left her with PTSD: “I experience auditory hallucinations sometimes with camera clicks and severe paranoia and have been going to therapy for a lot of things but that included. I’ll hear a trash bag rustling and flinch in panic. I think it’s standard PTSD.”

-Here’s the trailer for Joshua Jackson’s new Showtime drama, Dr. Death.

-You know there’s too much TV out there when a new trailer drops for season two of Apple TV+’s Truth Be Told, starring Kate Hudson and Octavia Spencer, and it’s the first I’ve heard of this show.
