Reese Witherspoon Gets Her 4th of July On

Reese Witherspoon is looking hella festive today.

-The backlash over Scarlett Johansson being cast in transgender role does not seem to be dying down anytime soon. The more I think about her statement, the angrier I get about it.

-This video of an old dude trying to cop a feel of Mel B during The X Factor is so bad. Especially gross is Simon Cowell‘s immediate attempts to dismiss it.

-I keep forgetting/repressing the fact that Billy Crudup and Naomi Watts are together.

Joshua Jackson talked about why he didn’t hesitate to protest family separation at the US border: “Canadians should be just as outraged.” God damn, Pacey grew up so good!

Felicity Jones got married. I like the honeymoon style way more than the wedding style (though it is very “her”).

-Proof that the Star Wars fandom has been toxic for a long time: actor Ahmed Best says he considered suicide over the backlash and death threats he got over his character, Jar Jar Binks.

-I don’t even read comic books and this Batman wedding stuff is kind of breaking my heart.

Yvette Nicole Brown says she is just “filling in” for Chris Hardwick at Comic-Con, not “jockeying” for his job. Take it!

-Aww, this bums me out: My Big Fat Greek Wedding’s Nia Vardalos and Felicity/Cougar Town’s Ian Gomez have filed for divorce after 23 years of marriage.

-An advertising watchdog found 51 examples of false advertising on GOOP’s website.

-Of all the people who could have defended Morgan Freeman following accusations of sexual harassment made against him by eight women, I didn’t think it would be Suzanne Somers. She said “Well, this probably won’t be real popular, but I think that women…I totally understand the Weinstein and Bill Cosby, that’s like, of course. But you know, like Morgan Freeman’s a big flirt. I know him really well. He sees you and he’ll like your dress and he’ll like your hair. He’ll like a lot of things…I hope the dance doesn’t stop. It’s seduction. It’s flirting. All those things are really fun. So I hope there’s a way we can find a nice medium with that.” Ugh.

-I like that David Foster‘s kids seem to be having fun with his engagement to the much younger Katherine McPhee.

-The video at the bottom of this article of the Set It Up couple setting up people on first dates is so adorable.

-Speaking of Set It Up, I watched it a friend’s house last weekend and couldn’t figure out why it looked so weird. It’s cause her TV has motion smoothing turned on. This makes so much sense now…

-I really enjoyed this interview with Dietland’s Marti Noxon, in which she talks about getting into “toe-to-toe screaming matches” with Sharp Objects director Jean-Marc Vallée, and all the flack she took for Buffy season six. I love that she calls Xander the embodiment of “impotent male anger.” I never realized what a gross character he was until I did a rewatch years later.

-I’m not exactly a crafty person, but man NBC’s Making It with Amy Poehler and Nick Offerman looks like a ton of fun. Now that The Handmaid’s Tale is wrapping up, this is about as heavy as I want my summer TV to get.

-I kinda want to see Skyscraper for some reason? I blame Neve Campbell’s presence.

Oscars 2017 Best and Worst Dressed

We expected more sleek dresses at the 2017 Academy Awards based on current runway trends, but this turned out to be a very princess-y red carpet. Still, I feel like we loved more gowns than we hated, which is a surprising twist. Below, Nicole and I run down our picks for the best and worst dressed at this year’s Oscars:

BEST DRESSED:

Jen: It takes a lot for me to get excited about a simple black strapless dress, but Kirsten Dunst cuts such a striking silhouette on the red carpet in this hourglass Dior it’s hard not to single her out. (I love that we both texted each other “boobs!” as soon as we saw her. Much like we did when we first saw Brie Larson.) Stunning.
Nicole: I love her bold lipstick and the elegant and whimsical choker. The dress was incredibly flattering. Love.

Nicole: When I saw Viola Davis, my first reaction was that Armani Privé had made a clear bet on who they thought would win best supporting actress (as they treated her so much better than Kidman — see below). It runs counter to the princess trend and is sleek, elegant and exquisite. Viola has had a great 2017 awards season and this is a gorgeous finale.
Jen: Yup, she was far and away my fave of the night in this red stunner. As soon as I saw her I tweeted that I forgave her for submitting in the wrong category AND for the HTGAWM finale. That’s how good this dress is.

Jen: Hailee Steinfeld’s Ralph + Russo dress photographs a bit bridal but I was in love with how it moved when she walked down the red carpet. The metallic underlays add a bit of edge to it. I love that she experimented – she usually dresses too old for her age but this is fun and frothy.
Nicole: Are you friggin’ kidding me? She’s wearing gold foil pasties! The dress is otherwise okay, but I just couldn’t get over the obviousness of the top.

Nicole: God, Scarlett Johansson is so beautifully cool. The dress is great but combined with her hair and the belt she radiates IDGAF.
Jen: This belted Alia is the perfect dress for a presenter. Cool, edgy but not scene-stealing.

Jen: I usually don’t love Elie Saab gowns, but Janelle Monae can wear a weird, clashing patterned sheer oddity and make it art. It doesn’t photograph as well but when she first stepped onto the red carpet, she was so regal and commanding that it took my breath away.
Nicole: She’s so iconically cool. The headband was lovely but not cutesy. Her skirt was a bit much (is that feathers?) but the top was gorgeous.

Nicole: Taraji P Henson owns this red carpet. Her midnight blue velvet Alberta Ferretti is Cookie-meets-elegance. The slit is beautiful and she’s so perfectly herself in that dress.
Jen: Leave it to Taraji P. Henson to have me gushing about a velvet dress (which no one else could ever make me do). We don’t deserve her.

WORST DRESSED:

Jen: The two greatest mysteries in Hollywood: why does Felicity Jones keep getting cast in absolutely everything, and why she’s allergic to colour? Tom + Lorezno aptly called this drab Dior “the colour of old bras”. It’s also hitting her at a weird, unflattering place at her waist.
Nicole:  No jewelry? No belt to pull it together and give her a waistline? Maybe a hint of lipstick? Work with me here, Felicity.

Nicole: Dakota Johnson is a mess in this matronly gold Gucci… gown? My living room erupted in laughter at her comment: “I’m wearing Cartier. From a museum.” Basic. Also, what on earth is happening to her forehead? Explain this to me.
Jen: I assumed that Dakota Johnson was going to wear Gucci and I was going to be disappointed, and she didn’t let me down. She really leaned into the badness with this one though, thanks to the wrinkles, puckered seams (just say no to sateen, famous people!), and terribly flat hair.

Jen: Jessica Biel’s body is banging so good for her I guess, but man I do not love this sparkly body con KaufmanFranco topped with a weird-ass Tiffany necklace. I hate the low bun too, even though I know Nicole is going to tell me it’s very on-trend.
Nicole: The low bun is on trend but hers looks terrible. The dress is a mess and her theatrical husband is THE worst. Also, WTF is happening with her makeup? The critics in my living room would all like to know how she hit the red carpet in a failed cat eye.

Nicole: When I saw Nicole Kidman’s Armani Privé dress, my first thought was “Wait, no parrots?” I prayed that when she turned around there would be baby doll heads stapled to the train or something but alas, just a simple nude dress. Zzzzzzz.
Jen: Agreed! My greatest wish for this red carpet (besides Emma Stone not wearing sparkles) was that Nicole Kidman would keep up the weird witch lady style thing she’s been rocking lately. Instead, she bores us with this pale halter.

Jen: I know this is a contrary opinion (at least, it sure seems like it judging by Twitter’s reaction to this dress), but I was a little disappointed by Ruth Negga’s custom Valentino. I like the crown and the red eyeshadow, but I find the neckline to be a bit dowdy. It doesn’t help that Ginnifer Goodwin is wearing basically the same dress.
Nicole: The neckline killed it for me. I expect weirder and cooler from her. This was neither.

Nicole: Oh, Emma Stone. I feel like this is the same Givenchy dress I’ve seen over and over all through this season. She took no risks. It’s not a fail so much as a disappointment.
Jen: I mean, this is fine and I actually don’t hate the fringe detail or the dark lip but I’m not blown away. Same with Michelle Williams for me. They both look lovely but are not the bold statements I was hoping they would be.

Everyone Struggles To Survive in The 100 Promo

-I don’t know if anything will bring me back to The 100, but this new promo sure is trying hard.

-Welp, this isn’t a good sign: People is reporting that Kim Kardashian and Kanye West are at odds over Trump and their friends are encouraging them to ‘hold on.’

-Welp squared: Johnny Depp is reportedly still trying to get out of paying Amber Heard.

-According to Us Weekly, Brad Pitt isn’t sure if he’ll be seeing his kids on Christmas.

-Lots of stars are paying tribute to Alan Thicke today, including Leonardo DiCaprio: “When Alan Thicke walked in the room, quite frankly, no one was cooler. I miss him already.”

-I’m actually surprised that it took this long for a Warner Bros shakeup.

Jennifer Lawrence continues to gleefully tell stories about being super gross.

-Speaking of Passengers stars being gross, Chris Pratt says he stays connected with his Parks & Rec costars Nick Offerman and Adam Scott by sending each other pictures of their poop.

-The Bruno Mars edition of Carpool Karaoke is kind of meh. Is the honeymoon over?

-I”m kind of living for this clip of Matthew Rhys talking about almost ruining Keri Russell’s dress during their White House visit.

Susan Sarandon is now counting on Kanye West to lobby Trump on climate change. Can she just…stop?

-After Piers Morgan questioned Lady Gaga‘s rape claims, she graciously suggested they end their Twitter war and hash it out in an interview instead.

-Goodness, I am not feeling Felicity JonesRogue One photocall dress. The premiere dress is just a slight improvement.

-Judging by her latest tweet, it seems like Emmy Rossum won her Shameless salary fight.

Ben Affleck is still pressed about the media’s coverage of his romance with Jennifer Lopez and Gigli. If he didn’t like it, why does he insist on reminding us of it?

-Is it weird that I’m looking forward to CW’s Riverdale? I mean, Archie’s parents will be played by Luke Perry and Molly Ringwald. That’s perfect casting!

Sarah Paulson doesn’t want to hear your questions about catfights on the Ocean’s 8 set.

-The SAG nominations have long been considered one of the most reliable Oscar-night predictors but this year’s noms are…weird. Snubbing Oscar fave La La Land in favour of Captain Fantastic? Nominating Emily Blunt over Ruth NeggaIsabelle Huppert or Annette Bening?  On the TV side, there were lots of new faces, with the Drama Actress category featuring 4/5 actresses from freshman shows (and 4/5 on Netflix). At least Sterling K Brown  was nominated twice (and cried when he found out).

Rachel Dratch attempting to survive obstacle courses on Billy on the Street is never not funny. “Drown Jimmy Fallon in beer!” “Rachel knows all the words to ‘F*ck the Police’ because she went to Dartmouth!”

-This is a great interview with Phoebe Waller-Bridge on how she created Fleabag, one of my favourite new shows of the year.

-Meanwhile, here’s Pheobe turning the “12 Days of Christmas” into a creepy stalker story.

-How the hell does this headline get paired with this photo and no one goes “uh, guys? we might have a problem.”

-Weird casting: Sebastian Stan is joining Margot Robbie in a Tonya Harding biopic.

-Weird casting, part 2: Rosario Dawson vs Katherine Heigl in a new Single White Female meets Obsessed movie trailer.

Christopher Nolan‘s Dunkirk trailer dropped today and this does not seem like typical summer film fare.
