–Billie Eilish is on the cover of GQ, in which she talks about past relationships (“Here’s a bomb for you: I have never felt desired. My past boyfriends never made me feel desired. None of them”), and her style (“Sometimes I dress like a boy. Sometimes I dress like a swaggy girl. And sometimes I feel trapped by this persona that I have created because sometimes I think people view me not as a woman”).

-Glee’s Amber Riley spoke out on the Lea Michele controversy, saying this was the first time in two years that the actress had called her. “I’m not going to say that Lea Michele is racist. That’s not what I’m saying…She’s also pregnant and I think that everybody needs to chill. Y’all dragged her for a couple of days. But at the same time, in my inbox there are a lot of black actors and actresses telling me their stories and were letting me know they have dealt with the same things being on set, being terrorized by the white girls that are the leads of the show.”

-This story about how Kiersey Clemons fell in love with her stunt double Ebony De La Haye on the set of Sweetheart is so sweet and exactly what I needed today. (Clemons is in the Nick Offerman movie Hearts Beat Loud, which is now on Netflix and is quickly becoming my go-to comfort movie.)

–Ellen Degeneres has responded to the backlash over her Black Lives Matter comments.

–Dwayne Johnson posted an impassioned, 8-minute video addressed to Trump.

–Meghan Markle gave a heartfelt virtual commencement speech to this year’s graduating class at her former high school. “I wanted to say the right thing and I was really nervous that I wouldn’t, or that it would get picked apart. And I realized the only wrong thing to say is to say nothing because George Floyd’s life mattered and Breonna Taylor’s life mattered and Philando Castile’s life mattered and Tamir Rice’s life mattered, and so did so many other people whose names we know and whose names we do not know.”

–Emma Watson is promising to learn and be better after she posted three black boxes but had not broken her silence before that.

-I love all the directors who pledged to hire John Boyega after he expressed concern that participating in the protests would damage his career.

Golden Globes 2019: Best and Worst Dressed

 

TV and film’s biggest stars pulled out all the stops at the 77th annual Golden Globe Awards on Sunday. Red lips, big sleeves and plunging necklines were the big themes of the red carpet. Nicole and I made our picks for the best and worst looks of the night below. (Spoiler alert: we both liked Kerry Washington’s boob necklace. Fight us.)

BEST DRESSED AT THE 2020 GOLDEN GLOBES:

Jen: I adore a good ladysuit and Fleabag’s Phoebe Waller-Bridge more than delivers in this sparkly Ralph & Russo. Love the cut, love the hair, love the attitude, love her.

Nicole: Although the structure of Beanie Feldstein’s Oscar de la Renta gown is simple, it’s flattering and I like the way the neckline frames her face and her simple yet elegant braided headband. The look is fun, youthful and perfect for a young nominee.

Jen: Ana de Armas‘ knives are out in this sparkling blue Ralph & Russo number. Bonus points for the pockets!

Nicole: Taylor Swift is wearing boho Italian brand Etro and the bold print is a standout on the red carpet. The tank-style top is casual and the cutout keeps the large structured gown from overwhelming her frame. The gown says ‘I know I’m just here for fun and definitely not to win for #Cats.’

Jen: When Zoey Deutch stepped onto the red carpet in this perfectly tailored canary Fendi jumpsuit, I gasped. The colour is perfect, the hair is excellent and the jewelry pulls the whole thing together. A stunner.

Nicole: Charlize Theron is wearing Dior as per usual but this look is carried by her overall styling with the black nails, the corset trend, the shoulder cape and a totally different green shade that we’ve not seen. Electric and edgy and matches her overall vibe. Max girl crush.

Jen: I was really hoping Saoirse Ronan would bring it, and she did not disappoint! This slinky, backless, sideboob-y Celine is a dream. She can, as the kids say, step on my neck.

Nicole: Kerry Washington in Altuzzara is a revelation. I love the slinky skirt which totally offsets the structured jacket under which she’s wearing… a necklace? God, I love this even though I have no idea what’s happening. Her styling is impeccable with a sleek bob and bright red lip. Edgy and elegant. [Jen: I also love this look but judging from the internet, we’re totally alone in this 🤣]

WORST DRESSED AT THE 2020 GOLDEN GLOBES:

Jen: I love when stars take a risk on the red carpet, but Gwyneth Paltrow‘s Fendi look is a LOT to process. My eyes don’t know where to focus first. The ab-baring bikini with the prairie dress cover up? The necklace buried underneath? The colour that matches her spray tan? The ass corset? It’s all too much!!

Nicole: Jennifer Lopez showed up with A Rod who looked more like her security detail than her fiancée. From the neck up, she’s gorgeous. Then it’s like a Christmas gift that I wrapped (i.e. – no amount of bows can make up for how awful it looks). Wrinkled and big and not what I would have expected from Maison Valentino or her. (Also shut the f*ck up during her interviews, ARod.)

Jen: I know the internet is in love with Baby Yoda, but there’s no need for cosplay, Jodie Comer. This is a wrinkled, shapeless disaster from Mary Katrantzou. Villanelle would never!

Nicole: Cate Blanchett is a VIBE but her Mary Katranzou dress is as messy as the film she’s nominated for (Where’d You Go Bernadette was better as a book!). She leans into the statement sleeve trend but the bodice and skirt throw this look off-kilter. New York Times’ IG caption said “wait for the back” but I guess that’s only because it’s just as bad from behind?

Jen: Dakota Fanning plays the part of a pouffy princess in Dior. I’m all for a bit of whimsy on the red carpet, but Kirsten Dunst did it better tonight in pale pink Rodarte.

Nicole: From the waist up, Scarlett Johansson up looks lovely. Predictable but lovely. So why on earth would Vera Wang feel the need to add a giant ass bow? Why does this continue to be a thing? Also can we just construct better gowns that don’t need figure skater material to hold them together? What happened to good old fashioned double-sided tape??

Lizzo Slays on the Cover of Elle

-Usually the best month for magazine covers is September, but as good as last month was, the October covers are KILLING it. We have Lizzo in Elle talking about representation (“I didn’t love who I was. And the reason I didn’t love who I was is because I was told I wasn’t lovable by the media, by [people at] school, by not seeing myself in beauty ads”),  Jennifer Aniston on Instyle talking about turning 50 (“I don’t feel any different. Things aren’t shutting down in any way. I feel physically incredible. So it’s weird that it’s all of a sudden getting telegraphed in a way that’s like, ‘You look amazing for your age.’ I think we need to establish some etiquette around that dialogue and verbiage”), Tom Holland in GQ talking about Gwyneth Paltrow being confused by the MCU (“I mean, I always know what movie I’m in”), Halsey in Cosmopolitan talking about coming to terms with public perception (“I shared a lot about myself, assuming the world would be kind. And that hasn’t quite been the case”), Lupita Nyong’o in Vanity Fair talking about how her team was nervous the day of the Oscars (“Beyoncé did the trick. We danced it off, we had a good laugh, and then we sat down. You’ve got to let the oxygen in”), Harry Styles on The Face talking about wanting to act (“Music, you try and put so much of your­self into it; act­ing, you’re try­ing to total­ly dis­ap­pear in who­ev­er you’re being”), and Camila Cabello in Elle talking about her relationship with Shawn Mendes (“I don’t know; people can say whatever they want to say. They can speculate, but at the same time, we are going to live our own lives, enjoy it, and fall for each other like nobody is watching”).

-Meanwhile, Shawn and Camila were spotted last night in Toronto near Portland Variety (not by paps, but by regular folks). We’re not really a pap town until tonight when TIFF starts — and I’m pretty sure King W is his home base when he’s in town because that’s where he’s often spotted.

-Whomp whomp: Jeremy Renner has deactivated his app.

–Nicki Minaj took to Twitter today to announce she’s retiring from music to focus on starting a family.

-60 Minutes Australia is airing what seems to be a takedown of Meghan Markle, and the internet is not having it.

–Dylan Farrow has responded to Scarlett Johansson‘s defense of Woody Allen: “Scarlett has a long way to go in understanding the issue she claims to champion.”

-Stranger Things kiddo Millie Bobby Brown is getting her own beauty line and while I wish her all the best, this feels like TOO MUCH.

–Anne Hathaway is showing off her chalet-style country house for Architectural Digest.

-This Liz Phair interview is really, really good, mostly because there’s such a push and pull between her and the interviewer, especially when Ryan Adams comes up.

–Lana Del Rey is the latest musician to take to Twitter to bitch at a professional critic. What makes this suck even harder than usual is the article she’s referencing is really, really good.

–Lil Nas X’s new video is cute. I have no idea what his explanation means, but I think he’s f***ing with us. Maybe?

-The Mad About You reboot trailer doesn’t actually feature any footage from the Mad About You reboot.

-I don’t know why this video resurfaced of Ethan Hawke in a YMCA dance class, but I appreciate it.

–Dakota Fanning is defending her new film, in which she plays a British orphan raised Muslim in Ethiopia.

–Brad Pitt says Quentin Tarantino is thinking about a streaming version of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood that would expand the film into several episodes and add cut footage. “It’s a pretty arousing idea.”

-Here’s the Just Mercy trailer, starring Michael B Jordan, Jamie Foxx and Brie Larson. It’s from the guy who did Shortbus 12 and I really wanted to see it at TIFF but I just couldn’t make it work.

–Sterling K. Brown stars in the first trailer for the buzzy Waves. I chose this movie on a lark when I was picking my TIFF tickets without knowing anything about it other than I liked the director, and its since premiered at the Telluride Film Festival to rapturous reviews.
