Carey Mulligan’s American Style

carey mulligan instyle cover

Carey Mulligan covers the June issue of InStyle and mentioned something I’d never really considered before: British people don’t typically wear baseball caps. “I used to feel self-conscious about wearing one because I’m not American, but it’s a great way to navigate life without makeup.”

-I unfollowed a lot of (mostly white) celebrities on Instagram this weekend. If they hadn’t said a peep about what’s going on in the world or didn’t choose to go dark to cede the spotlight to those more qualified to speak on it and instead used their huge reach to show off pics from their pool or some shit, then bye-bye. I was, however, impressed by how many were using their platform to amplify black voices and spread the word about donations/resources, including some I found entirely unexpected like Grant Gustin, Blake Lively (who had a plantation wedding), Chris WoodTimothée Chalamet, and John Cusack.

-Insecure actor Kendrick Sampson was protesting peacefully when police pointed a gun directly at him before hitting him with rubber bullets (seven times) and with a baton.

-I don’t watch 9-1-1 but I’m guessing it’s going to be tense on set when filming resumes. Ryan Guzman is facing major backlash after admitting that he uses racial slurs. Meanwhile, Oliver Stark (whose character many fans ship with Guzman’s character) has been using his social media to amplify black voices all this past week and does not seem impressed by his costar.

-I love how quickly K-pop stan Twitter worked together to crash an app encouraging Dallas residents to rat out protestors.

-In news that should suprise no one with eyeballs, Julianne Hough has split from her husband.

Prince Andrew is permanently retiring from public life. He’s still screwing up, though! He’s reportedly been sued for failing to pay what he owned on a Swiss ski chalet.

-Kensington Palace is planning on taking legal action over Tatler’s Kate Middleton cover story.

-I didn’t know that Josh Lucas and his ex-wife Jessica Ciencin Henriquez had reconciled, but apparently they had because she just accused him of cheating on her during the pandemic.

-Remember when Silicon Valley star Thomas Middleditch gave an interview in Playboy in September where he said swinging saved his marriage? Yeah, she’s left him.

Camila Cabello wrote about her struggles with OCD and anxiety.

-If you haven’t read Forbes’ article from Friday entitled “Inside Kylie Jenner‘s Web of Lies — And Why She’s No Longer a Billionaire” it’s worth your time. It’s hilarious that her response was “i can name a list of 100 things more important right now than fixating on how much money i have”, seeing as the whole point of the article is how her family is so fixated on how much money they have that they’ve been going to great lengths to lie about it for years.

-Insecure is having one of the best seasons on TV right now.

-Killing Eve just wrapped up one of the worst. Pajiba just called it “the new Dexter.” Ouch.

Cush Jumbo, who plays Lucca Quinn on The Good Fight, is leaving show. She said in a statement “Due to the pandemic forcing us to shut down early we weren’t able to wrap up Lucca’s story fully and so I hope if schedules allow I can return next season to do that.”

Nina Dobrev and Shaun White have gone Instagram official.

-I’m catching up on the J.K. Rowling Twitter controversy. So…she just had a transphobic statement already copied on her clipboard? Yikes.

-Why are people still interviewing Woody Allen about this stuff? Why?

Four women filed a new rape and sexual assault suit against Harvey Weinstein and Disney.

-Here’s the full trailer for HBO’s Perry Mason reboot, starring Matthew Rhys. When this was announced last year I wasn’t sure I’d be into it, but this seems like exactly the kind of comfort food I need right now.

Robert Pattinson Almost Lost Batman Before He Even Had It

Robert Pattinson for Time Out Magazine

Robert Pattinson is in the new issue of Time Out, in which he talks about almost losing Batman because news leaked that he was up for it (“I hadn’t even done the audition. It’s just nerve-wracking because I was really excited about it and you think: really, is this how I’m going to lose this role? It’s the most annoying circumstances to lose something”), and being surprised by blowback when he said Batman wasn’t a superhero because he has no powers (“People got very angry about it. It’s bizarre. I still can’t understand the argument. Okay, he’s a superhero, I’m sorry!”).

-A U.S. prosecutor said Prince Andrew has provided “zero cooperation” to the investigators who want to interview him as part of their sex trafficking probe into Jeffrey Epstein. Buckingham Palace issued a “no comment” response.

-The Daily Mail is claiming that Ellen DeGeneres confirmed that she’ll hold the first sit-down interview with Meghan Markle since she and Prince Harry quit the Royal family, but if you watch the clip, that’s not what she said. It sounded more like “I’d be excited [if that happened].” If there is an eventual interview, my money is on Oprah, who was at their wedding.

-Also, did William and Kate authorize the Daily Mail to use copyright photos of their kids even though Harry and Meghan are currently suing the publication? This is so messy.

Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan have settled their custody agreement. He also tangled with some trolls on Insta.

-Celebrities took to social media yesterday to pay tribute to Kobe Bryant.

-This is a great profile of Parasite director Bong Joon Ho. He talks about drawing all his own storyboards for his movies (“When I go on set without a storyboard, I feel like I’m in central station in only my underwear”), and how he can’t see himself being able to step into a big studio production (“For me to feel safe, I have to start the project, build everything up, one by one, and see it to the complete finish. I really admire directors who can easily do superhero movies and big-budget films”).

Lukas Haas reached out to Vulture’s Hunter Harris (who is a must-follow on Twitter) to talk about his new song because he really liked what she wrote about him in Widows last year, and she kept asking him if he was the king of the Pussy Posse. Bless her.

-I thought I had watched all of Glee but I must have missed the last season cause I don’t remember Billie Eilish‘s brother Finneas being on it at all. But here he is!

-The Turning, a new horror movie starring Mackenzie Davis and Finn Wolfhard, has a ending so terrible that it’s getting an unheard of “F” Cinemascore from audiences.

-Can Adam Driver host SNL every week? His episode was the best in a long time, including this reprisal of Kylo Ren on Undercover Boss.

-The Grammys red carpet was especially underwhelming this year, no?

-Meanwhile, the Roc Nation brunch managed to have more star power than the Grammys.

-The first films to be getting buzz at Sundance include a romcom from The Lonely Island crew called Palm Springs starring Andy Samberg and Cristin Milioti, Carey Mulligan‘s revenge pic Promising Young Woman, and Alison Brie‘s trippy Horse Girl, which she says she wrote based on her own history of mental-health issues.

-Speaking of Carey Mulligan, she thinks Oscar voters should prove they’ve watched all the eligible films. “I wonder if the system works in terms of getting sent 100 screeners. Maybe you shouldn’t be allowed to vote unless you can prove you’ve seen every single one. There should be a test. The films that did get left out are indisputably brilliant. I’m talking about Hustlers, Little Women and The Farewell.” She’s not wrong.

Chris Evans, Rachel Dratch and John Krasinski try out a Boston accent for Hyundai’s Super Bowl commercial.

Steve Carell plays a Democrat strategist who helps a retired veteran (Chris Cooper) run for mayor in a small, conservative town in the trailer for Irresistible.

Lizzo Is an Entertainer of the Year

succession regina king ew

EW’s Entertainers of the Year include LizzoAwkwafina, Renée Zellweger, Regina King, Taika Waititi and the cast of Succession.  I love how everyone is lusting over the Jeremy Strong pic. I don’t see it as Kendall but his real life photo shoots bring a whole other energy. Also, Sarah Snook talks in her adorable real accent in the video and she so wonderfully perky and un-Shiv-like.

-Time also named Lizzo the entertainer of the year. My Spotify Wrapped rankings would agree.

-Well, it now makes more sense why Justin Timberlake broke his silence on the affair rumours long after the story had died down. According to Us Weekly, “Jessica encouraged Justin to put out his statement on Instagram because she felt embarrassed by his actions and wanted him to take accountability.” People is quoting a source who says Jessica will stand by her man: “Obviously Justin drank too much this time, but Jessica believes he didn’t cheat on her. What’s most important to her in life is her family and being the best mom to Silas. She’ll never break up her family over something like this.”

-Meanwhile, Bette Midler wants Justin Timberlake to publicly apologize to Janet Jackson. Don’t we all?

-In the Hollywood Reporter, Reese Witherspoon addresses the backlash over her sizeable paycheque for Apple’s The Morning Show. “I guarantee these companies are real smart, and if they agree to pay us, they’re doing it for a reason. They probably had a lot of lawyers and a lot of business people decide on that number because they knew that they were going to make more than that back. Does it bother people when Kobe Bryant or LeBron James make their contract?”

-The SAG nominations were announced today. It’s insane that Knives Out isn’t nominated for ensemble cast, but good on the cast of Parasite for making the cut (I finally saw that movie and holy s%$# it’s amazing).

Harvey Weinstein and his former studio have a tentative $25 million deal with his accusers. Weinstein, accused of offenses ranging from sexual harassment to rape, won’t have to apologize, admit wrongdoing or pay his own money.

-How did I miss all the GIFs of Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s penis this week? (NSFW, obvs)

-As we recover from the first half of the CW crossover (which just isn’t as fun as they usually are, right?) here’s the first trailer for the CW’s newest superhero show Stargirl, starring Luke Wilson.

-Look, I don’t even go here but why is the Star Wars cast shading Rian Johnson and The Last Jedi? He did what he had to do.

-Holy cow the trailer for Promising Young Woman, starring Carey Mulligan, looks amazing! It costars Connie Britton, Molly Shannon, Alison Brie, Adam Brody and Max Greenfield.
