Julia Roberts Talks Hollywood Longevity

julia-roberts-marie-claire

-In her new Marie Claire cover story, Julia Roberts talks about how Hollywood has changed during her lifetime: “When I started, there wasn’t any social networks, the internet barely existed, people couldn’t take photos with their mobile phones. There were logical stages of career progression. You did a film, if it worked you’d have a chance to work again. If your second film was a success, you could get a better pay cheque and another new role. Now someone can come out of nowhere and achieve incredible things, which I imagine is very destabilising. Building a career was a lot more methodical 30 years ago.”

Janelle Monáe brought Lupita Nyong’o onstage to dance during her show and it made my day.

-Spider-Man: Far From Home is being promoted as a crucial epilogue to Avengers: Endgame — and it seems to be working. It’s tracking for a $150M holiday weekend at the box office.

Rihanna got emotional when reuniting with her old PE teacher and it was v. sweet.

-I recently binged a lot of episodes of Drunk History, which is always a good idea. The new Tessa Thompson episode in which she plays Eartha Kitt needs to get in my eyeballs stat!

-This recap of every insanely good look Céline Dion has worn at couture week thus far is perfect content.

-Breaking Bad star Anna Gunn cleared up Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul‘s cryptic tweets. It’s not for the upcoming BB movie; the actors are going into business on a tequila brand called Dos Hombres.

-The world does not need a live-action Little Mermaid movie, but if it must exist I’m glad that Ariel will be played by a beautiful black actress who was discovered by Beyonce.

Keanu Reeves took a break from being the internet’s boyfriend to start shooting the new Bill & Ted movie.  We’ll allow it.

-Yikes! Channing Tatum has been granted a restraining order after a woman allegedly broke in and was found living in his Hollywood home.

A$AP Rocky was arrested last night following an altercation on a street in Sweden.

-This is lovely: Pharrell Williams surprised 114 Harlem students by guaranteeing them “A-list internships” at the end of their freshman year of college.

-Looks like Noel and Liam Gallagher still need buckets of therapy.

-I’m bummed that Fred Savage‘s after-show spoof What Just Happened is mostly just a bitter takedown of fan culture. The premise was promising.

-The first trailer for Jumanji: The Next Level has arrived. I watched the last one on a plane and was surprised at how much I laughed.

Ezra Miller Hates Hippies, Loves Goats

Ezra Miller talks about living on a “polyamorous farm” which, yeah, totally tracks.

-His GQ interview included a goat in labour. I wonder if his publicist had to pay extra for that? (Full disclosure: I couldn’t read the whole thing. Once I got to “I find the presence of cell phones bad for my mood. I can feel cell phones when they’re around” I was worried my retinas would detach from such strenuous eye-rolling…)

Bryan Tyree Henry is best known for Atlanta but he’s doing the press rounds now for both Widows and If Beale Street Could Talk, which means he’s getting the GQ treatment.

-Congrats to Gabrielle Union who, after going public with her troubles with infertility, welcomed a new baby girl with hubby Dwayne Wade today via surrogate.

-Yay, Max Greenfield will reprise his role as Leo on the Veronica Mars reboot. (I loved his character at the time, but it retrospect it was super creepy that a fully grown cop was dating a teenager.) Patton Oswalt will also join the cast.

Halsey would like us all to know that she is not dating John Mayer. Understandable.

A magazine dared ask Nicole Kidman about her relationship with her adopted children Connor and Isabella, but she didn’t really say much: “They are adults. They are able to make their own decisions. They have made choices to be Scientologists and as a mother, it’s my job to love them.”

Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck are officially, finally, for real, no take-backsies divorced.

-Wow, Olivia Munn does NOT like being referred to as a “tech girl.”

-Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke says she wanted more actors of colour, but author Stephanie Meyer resisted. One day I would love to see a tell-all about how authors like Meyer and E.L. James totally messed up their film adaptations.

-This might be the best story about working for a Hollywood agent that I have ever read.

-Speaking of great Twitter threads, this one about the dumbest things people have said to celebrities is gold.

-Hollywood has officially run out of reboot ideas, so they’re looking to hit songs for inspiration. Anyone up for watching a Sk8er Boi TV show?

-Maybe love isn’t dead after all. Meg Ryan confirmed her engagement to John Mellencamp.

-In the trailer for the new season of her Scientology show, Leah Remini is all about the receipts.

-It lives! Brooklyn Nine-Nine will make its NBC debut on Jan 10.

-Avengers 4 is rumoured to be 3 hours, and I don’t understand anything Hollywood does anymore.

Shia LeBeouf and FKA twigs are officially a thing and I want so much more for her….

Bryan Cranston says he hasn’t seen a script yet for the Breaking Bad movie and is not even sure if he’s in it.

Julia Roberts’ Amazon show Homecoming has left me a little cold (I’m on episode 6 so I’m withholding judgment), but there’s no doubt it’s a technical marvel. This piece on its visual style and inspirations is fascinating.

James Franco and Liam Neeson star in the Coen Bros‘ upcoming anthology western The Ballad of Buster Scruggs.

Taylor Swift Continues to Own Katy Perry

Katy Perry dropped a new video — but Taylor Swift is still the one getting all the buzz today. This is getting embarrassing.

-The buzz is building that Katy Perry and Taylor Swift will perform together at the VMAs. I’m really not sure why Katy would do this. She’s already in a losing position: her new album tanked, and Taylor is clearly using the show to launch her new album, overshadowing any spotlight Katy will get as the host. What’s the upside for Katy here?

Katy Perry was cryptic about whether she’s dating Orlando Bloom again, saying “When you get older, lines get blurred.” That’s the nicest way to describe hooking up I’ve every heard.

Laura Prepon and Ben Foster (aka the couple everyone forgets is a couple) just had a baby.

A-Rod and J-Lo work out together in a new obnoxious workout video.

-Truth in Advertising filed complaints against Gwyneth Paltrow‘s company to the California gov’t, stating GOOP makes false medical claims to sell products.

Kate Hudson is getting in on the lifestyle advice action, seeing as acting doesn’t seem to be a thing that she does anymore.

Cole Sprouse may actually be singlehandedly ruining Riverdale for me. I just can’t with this kid.

-Holy crap, yet ANOTHER Joker movie has been announced. Who even wants this?

-The new trailer for This Is Us season two made me teary, which is the entire point of the show. (I’ve decided I’m going to stop fighting it and just give in. A lot about this show still chafes me, but what they do well, they do really, really well. It doesn’t hurt that this clip is so Randall heavy.)

-This is such a strange story: a book seems to have bought its way onto the NYT bestseller YA list.

-I kind of love that Henry Cavill‘s girlfriend is a) beautiful while also being normal-looking, b) not a teenager, c) a stuntperson, d) can clearly kick his ass.

-This is an interesting look at what happens when a show like Game of Thrones, which is all about plot, suddenly sucks at plotting.

-I also liked these 27 things that didn’t make sense about the White Walker battle in the last episode. (I would add a 28th: why didn’t they light up the fire sword again when they were worried about freezing to death?)

Anthony Bourdain is fed up with food waste in the new trailer for Wasted!

-Here’s the trailer for Richard Linklater’s Last Flag Flying, which stars Steve Carell, Bryan Cranston and Laurence Fishburne.
