Julia Roberts Talks Hollywood Longevity

julia-roberts-marie-claire

-In her new Marie Claire cover story, Julia Roberts talks about how Hollywood has changed during her lifetime: “When I started, there wasn’t any social networks, the internet barely existed, people couldn’t take photos with their mobile phones. There were logical stages of career progression. You did a film, if it worked you’d have a chance to work again. If your second film was a success, you could get a better pay cheque and another new role. Now someone can come out of nowhere and achieve incredible things, which I imagine is very destabilising. Building a career was a lot more methodical 30 years ago.”

Janelle Monáe brought Lupita Nyong’o onstage to dance during her show and it made my day.

-Spider-Man: Far From Home is being promoted as a crucial epilogue to Avengers: Endgame — and it seems to be working. It’s tracking for a $150M holiday weekend at the box office.

Rihanna got emotional when reuniting with her old PE teacher and it was v. sweet.

-I recently binged a lot of episodes of Drunk History, which is always a good idea. The new Tessa Thompson episode in which she plays Eartha Kitt needs to get in my eyeballs stat!

-This recap of every insanely good look Céline Dion has worn at couture week thus far is perfect content.

-Breaking Bad star Anna Gunn cleared up Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul‘s cryptic tweets. It’s not for the upcoming BB movie; the actors are going into business on a tequila brand called Dos Hombres.

-The world does not need a live-action Little Mermaid movie, but if it must exist I’m glad that Ariel will be played by a beautiful black actress who was discovered by Beyonce.

Keanu Reeves took a break from being the internet’s boyfriend to start shooting the new Bill & Ted movie.  We’ll allow it.

-Yikes! Channing Tatum has been granted a restraining order after a woman allegedly broke in and was found living in his Hollywood home.

A$AP Rocky was arrested last night following an altercation on a street in Sweden.

-This is lovely: Pharrell Williams surprised 114 Harlem students by guaranteeing them “A-list internships” at the end of their freshman year of college.

-Looks like Noel and Liam Gallagher still need buckets of therapy.

-I’m bummed that Fred Savage‘s after-show spoof What Just Happened is mostly just a bitter takedown of fan culture. The premise was promising.

-The first trailer for Jumanji: The Next Level has arrived. I watched the last one on a plane and was surprised at how much I laughed.

Evan Rachel Wood “Felt Like Meat” During Vanity Fair Photo Shoot

Evan Rachel Wood Vanity Fair

Evan Rachel Wood wrote a series of sad tweets about her 2003 Vanity Fair cover shoot. “I was 15 and felt for the first time my identity being erased and the pressure to shut up and do what you are told.”

Iggy Azalea is NOT happy with her Maxim Australia cover.

-In other cover news, Kerry Washington looks fresh-faced and amazing on Allure.

Blake Lively made her first red carpet appearance since she announced she’s expecting and I thought she was going to strain something the way she was pushing out her tummy so hard.

-Also, there are more suggestions that parts of Blake‘s Preserve is plagiarized.

-I’m not a comic book fan so the only thing I know about the Suicide Squad is what I’ve gleaned from superhero shows on The CW (where I’m mostly  only paying attention to the abs), but I might have to read up now that Ryan Gosling, Will Smith, and Tom Hardy are rumoured to be joining the cast of the upcoming movie adaptation.

Jane Campion‘s Top of the Lake is officially returning for Season 2. As much as I admired that show, I think I’m taking a break from unrelentingly bleak TV for a while.

-To that point, I didn’t stick with The Knick, but this direction-focused recap makes me want to pick it up again.

-Speaking of bleak TV, I steered clear of Gracepoint after watching the terrible first episode, but every TV critic I follow on Twitter seems united in their belief that Anna Gunn is really, really bad in it.

-It’s been a rough week. Here’s a lovely photo of Joshua Jackson in Glamour, where he says he and Diane Kruger aren’t married because they’re both children of divorce and “not religious.”

Gillian Anderson thinks the next X Files movie should be of the “monster of the week” variety. I don’t disagree. I was a HUGE fan of that show and I still have no idea where the mythology ended up. Something about bees, maybe?

-I don’t know about you, but I always feel better knowing that George Clooney is in the same country as I am.

-The cast of The Wire came together last night for a reunion at PaleyFest. Here are 12 revelations from the panel, or you could just watch the whole thing here.

Chris Rock‘s Top Five was really well received at this year’s TIFF. Here’s the first trailer:

SAG Awards: Best and Worst Dressed

The stars threw out the red carpet rule book at this weekend’s SAG Awards, where they let their freak flags fly one last time in their last big outing before the Oscars. Not all of the risks worked, though. Here are my picks for the best and worst:

BEST:

It’s such a relief to see Amy Adams rebound so strongly after her American Hustle-esque Golden Globe gown. I love the colour and the neckline of this Antonio Berardi dress.

Also rebounding from the Golden Globes is Anna Gunn, who graduated from a too-pale gown to this killer, midnight blue Monique Lhuillier sparkler with a cute Breaking Bad-themed clutch.

Jennifer Lawrence also took a big step up from her GG gown in this sequined Dior Haute Couture. I loved it when I first thought it was just black, but I loved it even more once I figured out it was actually multi-coloured.

It’s not often that Sofia Vergara makes my best dressed list (never, actually), but she finally managed to pour herself into a super tight dress that I don’t hate. She’s doing her usual vamp thing, but this one is actually not too over-the-top. I could have done without the necklace, but baby steps…

It’s safe, it’s simple, it’s similar to something she’s worn before, but Jennifer Garner’s Max Mara dress is totally working for her. Love the giant earrings, too.

WORST:

Cate Blanchett can pretty much make anything work — even this odd Givenchy gown — but she’s really stretching our limits with this one. We’re not sure what’s worse: the tacky pink sequin detailing or the maternity-style draping.

Sandra Bullock’s high-sheen Lanvin dress looks like it escaped from a pile of rejected bridesmaids dresses. The giant bow and the metallic heels aren’t helping, either.

I can’t, Kerry Washington. I just can’t. You’re actually hurting my soul a little with this Prada midriff madness.

I’m usually ok with a jumpsuit on a red carpet, especially for an awards show like this one. But the colour on Julia Roberts’ Valentino outfit seemed dated. Also, if it was darker, I think it would have camouflaged the awkward drop crotch and clinginess around the hips.

I appreciate that Julie Bowen took a big swing with this risky Carolina Herrera dress and it’s certainly interesting. I just don’t think interesting always translates into good. Also, when she was being interviewed by E!, there was an obvious tear on the seam of her bodice. It’s strange that her people let her on camera without fixing it first.
